The Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) scheme—administered by India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC)—is now the most significant trade-facilitation programme of the nation, embracing over 5,000 importers, exporters and logistics services providers. The badge indicates a low-risk, trusted supply chain partner overseas and unlocks priority clearances, deferred payment of duty, Direct Port Delivery/Entry and high-priority dispute resolution. But for those benefits to continue, your certificate must remain valid.
For 2026, CBIC has enhanced digital controls, integrated the AEO portal with ICEGATE, and implemented annual self-declaration based renewal for Tier 1 entities certified on or after 01.04.2019 (Circular 18/2021). Manual scrutiny continues for T2, T3, and LO tiers. T1 entities must file their self-declaration between October 1 and December 31 to maintain uninterrupted benefits. Failing to renew within the specified window can result in overnight loss of fast-track benefits and having to reapply from scratch. This step-by-step guide presents the newest rules, timelines and paperwork you must obtain to enable a trouble-free renewal in 2026, condensed from CBIC circulars, FAQs and recent trade-facilitation announcements.
What Is AEO Certificate Renewal?
An AEO certificate is not perpetual.
| Tier | Standard validity (years) | Renewal window before expiry |
|---|---|---|
| AEO-T1 | 3 (annual filing of self declaration form) | 30 days |
| AEO-T2 | 3 | 60 days |
| AEO-T3 / AEO-LO | 5 | 90 days |
Note: For T1 certificates issued on or after 01.04.2019, renewal is via annual self-declaration and does not require full reapplication within 30 days.
These filing windows and validity periods are established by CBIC Circular 33/2016 (as modified), which is then reiterated in Public Notice 77/2020 and CBIC FAQ updates.
Why renewal matters
- Continuity of benefits – Rapid clearances, risk-based testing, and lower collateral are valid only during the live certificate period.
- International recognition – Unbroken status is required by most Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRAs).
- Regulatory compliance – Renewal re-examines your security, financial viability and statutory record.

AEO RENEWAL PROCESS DETAILS:
AEO T1: Entities given AEO T1 status on or after April 1, 2019, are renewed annually through the submission of an annual self-declaration form (format notified) and review. Every year between October 1st and December 31st, the annual self-declarations must be filed through the AEO web portal. The self-declaration will be reviewed and the AEO T1 certificate will be renewed by the customs administration after careful assessment. For a given year, AEO-T1 organisations that were certified between January 1st and December 31st may be exempt from filing the annual declaration. Customs may perform a Comprehensive Compliance Review (CCR) based on two or more years of self-declarations. Any issues detected may result in manual intervention, downgrade, or suspension of T1 status.
Parameters for Self Declaration Compliance:
1. Whether there is any case of infringement/Show Cause Notice/Order-in-Original of Customs or GST (erstwhile Central Excise and Service Tax) Laws booked against the AEO status holder and / or the directors / partners / sole proprietor / persons in charge of the applicant’s business for Customs related matter, during the last financial year?
2. Whether the Net Worth and Net Current Assets as per the Balance Sheet/IT returns duly audited/filed, are positive during the last financial year?
3. Whether any Insolvency, Bankruptcy or Liquidation proceeding has been initiated against the AEO Status holder during the last financial year?
4. Was there a new site or location introduced in the most recent fiscal year?
5. Whether the company’s records and information are protected from misuse, loss, and unauthorised access, and whether the current system for backup, recovery, archiving, and retrieval of those records and information continues to guarantee that there is no breach, intrusion, or dysfunction observed in the procedures related to these processes.
6. Whether, if required, the relevant commercial/financial records for the last financial year can be presented to Customs immediately.
For T1, AEO certifications are valid for three years.
AEO T2 and T3 Renewal: To renew an AEO (Authorised Economic Operator) T2 or T3, a new application with revised documentation must be submitted within 60 or 90 days, accordingly. This requirement applies only to T2, T3, and LO tiers. T1 entities certified after April 2019 do not need to submit a full renewal application unless they miss the annual self-declaration window.

The validity of AEO T2 certification is 3 and for 5 years for T3.

- T2/T3/LO certificates must still be renewed within their respective 60/90-day windows; otherwise, reapplication is needed.
2. Is there a grace period?
- T1 auto-renewal provides some flexibility within the Oct–Dec self-declaration window, but missing it may trigger manual scrutiny or temporary suspension.
- T2/T3/LO certificates have no formal grace period beyond the 60/90-day renewal window.
3. How frequently do I have to renew?
- T1: Annual self-declaration (auto-renewal)
- T2: Every 3 years
- T3/LO: Every 5 years

- Yes, upgrades from T1 to T2 are possible, but require submission of updated documentation, desk review, and possible site visits for T2 certification.
