An AEO Certification is essential for any organization which is involved in international trade. The AEO helps to streamline cargo security through close co-operation with the stakeholders of the international supply chain. The Customs department has further liberalized, simplified and rationalized the process of AEO accreditation in order to promote the ease of doing business.
In this Article, we are going to explain as to what are the necessary steps and compliances that need to be maintained once you have received AEO Status. AEO Maintenance should be an essential part of any organization to get the maximum benefits out of the AEO Scheme.
Maintenance of AEO Status
After receiving the AEO certification, the respective company shall stick to the standard which is set for them as the AEO certificate is considered to be the one which assures that the client shall receive the best of the products. Any changes that takes place in the company needs to be notified to the Authorized Economic Operator Programme Team, the changes shall include the following terms:
1) Changes in the legal entity.
2) Changes in the business name or address.
3) Changes in the nature of business.
4) Changes in the accounting and computing system.
5) Changes in the person responsible for custom.
6) Changes in the location in the international supply chain.
The changes shall be notified to the AEO Programme Team as soon as they are made or at least within 14 days of the changes made. If there is an error made by the employee of the company in the CRM system related to the supply, the correction needs to be done immediately and the same should be corrected in the CRM system and the AEO Programme Team.
The AEO status will not get affected if the AEO team has
1) Examined the reason for errors.
2) Taken appropriate remedial action to prevent a recurrence.
Validity of AEO Certification
The validity of the AEO certificate shall be three years for AEO-T1 & AEO-T2, and five years for AEO-T3 and AEO-LO.
Renewal of AEO Certificates
The AEO’s who wish to continue their AEO status and avail the benefits must submit their application before the lapse of their validity as per the following;
AEO-T1 before 30 days of expiry.
AEO-T2 before 60 days of expiry.
AEO-T3 before 90 days of expiry.

For the existing organization who wish to upgrade their AEO-T1 can get AEO-T2 or AEO-Lo certificate depending on their category. This certificate will be given within 15 days by the AEO Programme Manager. They shall also be open for applying AEO-T3 Certificate if they are eligible for it.
The applicants must highlight the changes while submitting the AEO renewal application as compared to the last application.
Review of the AEO Status by the AEO Programme Team
The AEO team shall review the status of the company periodically in order to ensure that the company adheres to the conditions and standards of the AEO status. Hence, it is advisable that the Authorized Economic Operator status holder should continue to reassess its AEO compliance with the condition of Certification. The frequency of such review will be of two years, three years, five years and five years in case of AEO-T1, AEO- T2, AEO-T3 and AEO-LO respectively.
The AEO Certification holder shall avail its benefits, but these AEO benefits can be put to hold if it is found by the Customs Authorities that the benefits have been misused. The Customs Authority then informs the AEO Program Manager who then takes the necessary action.
